Donating Goods, Money, or Services to

Literacy Volunteers of Wayne County

Literacy Volunteers of Wayne County is a 501(c)3, non-profit organization. It belongs to the communities it serves, and its success depends, at least in part, upon the support of those communities. While volunteer tutoring services are free to all students, providing those services does cost money. Any and all donations, whether of goods, money, or services, are greatly appreciated and help LV Wayne serve more people better. Also, all donations of goods and money are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowable by law. To a lesser extent, any costs you incur while donating goods, money, or services are also tax-deductible. More information on non-taxable donations can be sent to you at your request.

Cash Donations

There is a variety of ways you can make donations to LV Wayne. The most common is a cash donation, usually in the form of a check. All checks should be made out to "LV Wayne." Cash donations may be unrestricted, and used for general operating expenses, or restricted, and used to support certain expenditures or programs. We feel that, while all donations are important of themselves, it is also important that the donor get to know LV Wayne, to share in the successes of students and learn of the obstacles they help overcome.

It is also possible to make a donation to LV Wayne through the United Way Donor Choice Program. Literacy Volunteers of Wayne County is United Way Donor Choice Option #1440. Forms are available from your local United Way office.

In-Kind Donations

Any donations of goods or services is an in-kind donation. Donations of goods are tax-deductible up to the market value of the good. Donations of services are only tax-deductible to the amount that the provider incurred costs, for example, mileage, phone bills, photocopies, etc. Unfortunately, the market cost of donated services is not tax-deductible.

If you have computers, software, books, etc., that you would like to donate, please contact us as soon as possible. LV Wayne has been able to act as a community resource, putting donated items in the hands of those who can make good use of them, sometimes our students, sometimes others. Even if we cannot use these items, we may be able to direct you to an organization that can use them.

Finally, a word on books. We all hate to throw away books. But Literacy Volunteers is concerned with literacy and English proficiency, not technical matters or helping people read at post-graduate levels. More than once people have used LV as a "dumping ground" for books they did not have the heart to throw away. Children's and young adult's books are appropriate for our students; reading, writing, and grammar texts are always welcome. Please do not distract our valuable time away from helping people by leaving boxloads of inappropriate books on our doorstep. All other donations are more than welcome.
