LV Programs in Wayne County

In order to best serve the variety of adult learners in Wayne County, LV Wayne offers a variety of programs. Many people who did not benefit from public education learn best in one-to-one (OTO) situations, one of the reasons this became the LVA Model. For these adults, LV Wayne does offer OTO Tutoring, resulting in customized lessons and a great deal of individual attention. Others, however, learn more efficiently in groups, and so LV Wayne offers two-to-one or small group (3-6) instruction. Tutors who work with more than one student are usually experience educators, or they receive additional information on taking advantage of the group structure.

For those interested in technology, LV Wayne offers computer-assisted literacy and ESL instruction in the Sodus, Lyons, and Newark Libraries. While the equipment and space belong to the libraries, LV partners with them to provide the programming. Tutors receive additional training on the software that is available to learners and how the tutor may take advantage of it. The general goals of this program, aside from improving reading, writing, and/or math abilities, is to teach the students general computer skills and to touch-type, word process, spreadsheet, and database.

For employers wishing to meet certain standards (i.e. - ISO9000) or with concerns about waste and efficiency, LV Wayne offers post-employment programs. Tutors are assigned to work within a company with small groups of learners. Companies are asked to pay for all expenses of these programs, but no charges above cost are made.

For migrant farmworkers who come into the county to help with the annual harvests, LV Wayne offers free English as a Second Language instruction. There are free classes twice each week in Sodus, with limited transportation available in Western Wayne County. Also, each year two-three tutors go to select camps to work with large numbers of limited English proficient farmworkers. This long-term commitment to farmworkers has proved one of the most rewarding of LV Wayne's programs.

Literacy Volunteers of Wayne County offers free instruction to all people 18 or older who read at a 6th-grade level or below, or score below a IV on the NYS Placement Test. While we work extremely hard to serve as many people as possible as efficiently as possible, there is usually a waiting period between when people apply as students and when they receive tutors. The length of the wait depends upon several factors, including availability of volunteer tutors in a certain area or during a certain time period. In general, adults with developmental disabilities are better served by Wayne ARC, Finger Lakes Developmental Disabilities, or VESID.
