If you have experience in education, language arts, or as a trainer or facilitator, you might be interested in becoming a Tutor Trainer. Trainers are one of the most critical components of any Literacy Volunteer organization, as they provide the knowledge, skills, and impetus volunteer Tutors need to become effective instructors. Trainers also carry the heavy responsibility of helping volunteers with limited access to certain demographic groups prepare for a one-to-one relationship with individuals from some of those groups. While this is a difficult task, it is one of the beauties of the LVA model; that people who otherwise might never have met will develop meaningful personal relationships.
All LV Tutor Trainers must be certified by LV New York State, Inc. and LV America, Inc. LV New York State holds workshops approximately once each year for all those interested in becoming trainers. All trainers must have completed a Tutor Workshop for either Basic Literacy, ESL, or both, and have at least twenty-four hours of tutoring experience. In this way, a trainer knows first-hand what each tutor will face.
The Trainers' Workshop takes two days. LV Wayne will pay mileage costs. Upon completing the Trainers' Workshop, the potential trainer will assist an experienced trainer in conducting a Tutor Workshop before training on his/her own. Experienced trainers will be available at all times to help prepare for trainings and deal with any problems which might arise.
Once all workshops are completed, the time commitment is minimal. Volunteer Trainers might hold only one workshop each year, or at most three. While the Trainer is bound to be very busy during the workshops, between times there are no obligations. Furthermore, workshops can be worked into each trainer's schedules, providing potential volunteers concur.
